Microsoft Surface

This week, I shall be blogging about Microsoft Surface. I'm sure everyone must be thinking, what exactly is Microsoft Surface. Through this entry, I shall explore this innovative gadget and blog about my findings.

First up, what is Microsoft Surface?
Microsoft Surface is a revolutionary multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way. With a large, horizontal user interface, Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with data and each other.

So what does all these mean?
  • Users can grab digital information with their hand and interact with them by touching without use of mouse or keyboard
  • The system recognizes more than one point of contact at a time
  • The design makes it easy for many people to gather around it and provide a collaborative face-to-face computing experience
  • Physical objects placed on the surface can trigger various digital responses including transfer of digital content.
This short video will explain more about the capabilities of Microsoft Surface.

With such a technology available to us. It can totally revolutionize the way we do things. Imagine how hassle free it would be to transfer digital media. All we have to do is to place our ipod or cellphone on the surface and we can do the transfer without the use of any cables at all. Everything can be done by using our fingers and dragging digital media across the surface. Its that simple.

Payment is also a breeze now. Every time we go to a restaurant with a group of friends, splitting the bill is always a nightmare. But with Microsoft Surface, we can spilt the bill based on individual items simply by dragging the items around the surface. And we can make our payment by putting our credit cards on the table.

Transferring photos and editing them is also made easy with Microsoft Surface. One just has to place the camera on the surface and all the photos in the camera will spill out. By using the fingers, one can move photos around, change the photo's size and edit them on the spot. Other options also allow you to transfer the photo to another device such as a hand phone. Or you can also attached the phone in an email and send it to friends and family. This special feature can bring about much convenience to photo enthusiast.

Dining in a restaurant can be a new experience as well. Imagine the whole menu being place onto Surface. One is able to browse all the various food items that is available in the restaurant by dragging through the list. And ordering any item you desire is just a matter of dragging the image of the food to the centre of Microsoft Surface. An added bonus is that description of the food item can be added and one will be able to look at the description other relevant information with just a touch. With such a technology in place in restaurants, much man power can be saved when it comes to ordering. Our whole experience of dining will be changed as well. I think it would be quite interesting to use such technology to aid in our daily lives.

Because Microsoft surface is still a reflectively new product, it is mostly for commercial use only. When a cheaper version is release for the general public. I might consider getting one for myself. After all, it can really make transferring of digital information so much easier. And besides, it will make a nice coffee table too =P
