Rise of Social Media
The class on social media was a very enlightening experience for me. I have always been taking such medias around me for granted and not realizing the importance they play in our lives. After the class, I started to reflect more on social media.First I shall start with a social media with a high institutional control, namely the television. The information is disseminated to the masses and we have little control over all is shown on the television. However, it is still a very effective tool of reaching out to a large group of audience. That is perhaps why the army still adopt the television for their mobilization exercises.

The next media I would like to talk about is the radio. Although it used to be one with a high institutional control, but in current times, the masses have more control. Many radio stations have dedication services whereby audiences can make dedication and ask for their favorite songs to be played. Hence the consumers now have more influence over this form of media. And although one might think that the audience for radio has gone down over the years, it still remains as a popular media for car owners. I always tune in to
the radio during peak hours to obtain traffic updates so I can change my route and not waste precious time in a jam. As such, radio is another important Social Media around us.
And than we have Social Media which have high consumer control such as web forums. Information from a forum are usually contributed by ordinary people. People who post in the forum usually seek information or objects that other users can provide. Hence it is a very powerful form of media and there are forums for all kinds of various topic. I personally use several forums and I find them very useful indeed. Below is an example of a forum =)
The next form of Social Media I shall talk about are wikis. Wiki allows users to edit information on the site easily and it is a form of collaborative encyclopedia. Wikis are very useful to find out briefly on various topics. However it is to be noted that since anyone can post information on wikis, not everything from them are credible. However, they are still useful when you need some basic information about a topic.

With the rise of the internet, social medias have evolved. Where it used to be very institutional based and the masses have little control over the information to now where everyday users can contribute information through blogs, podcasts, forums, wikis and more. Social media is a very important part of our lives, it helps us keep in touch and be connected with the world. And like what we have learned about in class, the is a power shift taking place, with us the consumers being given more power to share information with the people around us.
